Spanish moss is a great look for Florida. It is also beneficial to both the surrounding environment and micro-environment within the tree canopy. The moss is home for insects and critters, to include bats (this is good).

The bad part of moss is that it competes for light, increases the wind resistance of the canopy (wind sail), and is extremely heavy (especially when wet).

Moss removal will reduce the weight of the canopy by thousands of pounds; improve the canopy health by increasing air and light penetration; and reduce the wind sail to lower limb and root plate failure potential.

The best and recommended way to remove the moss is by hand.  This minimizes the damage to the tree and the environment from toxic sprays such as Copper Sulfate.
